Adaptive Reuse Plan of the Monte Castellare Quarry

S.Giuliano Terme City - Pisa

1988 - 1989

This project stemmed from the restoration and recovery of the Monte Castellare quarry and further expanded to encompass overall environmental development of the hilly area surrounding the town of San Giuliano Terme. The project included the restoration of all former industrial buildings present in the area. The ultimate goal of the project was to restore a harmonious balance between the various construction and their surrounding environment, both from esthetic and functional points of view.

The restoration of the quarries and their connection with the borough represented the drivers of the project theme, the two strongholds that involved major work. Therefore, on the one hand, the plan foresaw the design of a new harmonious layout for the quarries that would underline the value of its landscape and, on the other hand, of a tree lined road from Caldaccioli  to Monte Castellare, connecting the various urban areas of this territory.
